The Promotora model is based on a Latin American program-type that reaches underserved populations through peer education. This means that promotoras come from the same neighborhood, speak the same language, and usually share some of the same or similar life experiences as the community members they serve.
The Promotoras are trained on a variety of leadership and health-related topics, by CVCC administrative staff and partner agency professionals with extensive experience in the their respective fields.
The CVCC facilitates two levels of an eight-week Promotora Academy I and II to enhance the skills and abilities of the Promotoras in the areas of advocacy, leadership, health, presentation skills, computers and cultural sensitivity. The Academy ends with a graduation ceremony, certificates and Promotora presentations.
